FTP Clients

Uploading files to a website is one thing that people imagine to be very hard. It isn't.

There are lots of programs that you can download for free and then use to send web pages from your own computer to the one at your web hosting service. These programs are called FTP clients.

I use Core FTL Lite. I like it because it is simple and I can just drag files across from one window to another.

To download this program type
Core FTP Lite Download
into the search bar below.

There are many other programs and after a while you may want to try others out, but the rest of the instructions here refer to the Core FTP Lite program

Your Web Hosting Service

Get the names of the two nameservers your site will be hosted on and go to your Domain Name Reseller to change the nameservers THERE.

Some Hosting Services require you to manually assign space to your domain name, especially if you have a reseller account.

There are too many web hosting services to give exact instructions for each and every one.

The instructions here are for Blacknight's Hosting Service. I use this for many sites, you get to talk to real people on the phone and they answer emails very quickly.

Blacknight send you an email with your username and log in details.

style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(153, 0, 0);">Copy the contents of this email using Copy and Paste into Word Pad or a similar program.

(This reduces problems with 1 and l and with 0, o and O, that arise from misread passwords.)

Log on to the exact address Blacknight send you, with the log in details in the email. This gets you into a Site Manager program where you can set up email accounts, email forwarding, etc.

Set up an email address corresponding to the Contact Us details on your website.

Set the email program up to reject all mail not addressed exactly correctly. This reduces spam mail would overload your inbox.

It is a good idea to use an email address like Geoff@perfecthexagrams.com, rather than info@perfecthexagrams.com

info@sitename addresses are very common, easily guessed and attract spam.

Using Core FTP Lite

Make sure you are online and log in to Core FTP.

A window will open. Click on the New Site button, (bottom left).

Fill in the site name, eg Perfect Hexagrams, spaces are fine here.

In the next space, Host/IP/URL type eg www.perfecthexagrams.com

The Username and password are those that your web host sent you by email. Copy and Paste, or type these in.

Click the Connect Button (bottom center)

If you have everything correct you will get a split screen with 2 windows.

The Left window is your computer, the Right window is your directory on the web host's computer.

In the Left window, navigate to the folder with your web pages in. Open this folder.

In the Right window navigate to the Public_html directory.

Click on the files in the Left Window and click on the Blue Arrow to transfer them.

When you have finished, disconnect and check the appearance of your site in different browsers, including Firefox.
