HTML Compiler

This is a complicated name for a program that turns text into web pages.

Get one FREE

There are many programs that will do this, including many which will cost you hundreds of $, or £ or €. There is an excellent program available for free download which will do 95% as good a job as the expensive programs.

Links change all the time as the Internet evolves, so use a search engine to find the current download link:

Search for Netscape Navigator 7.2 Download.

Download the program and Install it.

This is a marvellous free program, which is not available in the later versions of Netscape Navigator.

This website was built using Netscape Navigator 7.2

Where do I start?

  • Open Netscape Navigator 7.2 (Close any Internet connection windows that open)
  • Click on the Window Tab, at the top
  • Click on Composer.
  • Click on Format
  • Click on Page Colors and Background
  • Click on Use Custom Colors
  • Click on the white rectangle next to Background.
This gives you a block of colors to choose from. You can use any color, if you can find the hexadecimal code for it, but this is slightly more complex.

  • Click on  a pale color.
Leave the text and link colors as the defaults.
  • Click on Table (tab at top)
  • Click on Insert
  • Move your mouse to Table and Click
Tables make it easier to position different parts of your content on the web page.

A window opens up when you click on Table, asking how many columns and rows

  • Type 4 into number of rows
  • Type 4 into number of columns
  • Type 0 (zero) into the border size
  • Click OK
You can choose any numbers here.
If you set the border at 1 pixel or above your table will be visible, instead of just providing an invisible guide.

  • Click in the Top Left Cell  of the table
  • Click on Table tab at top
  • Move mouse down to Table Properties, Click
  • A window opens telling you about the table you have set up. Click on the Cell Tab of this window
  • Click on the Down Arrow next to Cell in the window
  • Scroll down and check the word, Column
  • Check the WIDTH box
  • Type 18 into the Width box
  • Click on the Down arrow next to Pixel
  • Check % of table instead
  • Click NEXT
  • Type 31 in the width box
  • Click the down arrow
  • Check % of table
  • Click NEXT
  • Type 31 in the width box
  • Click the down arrow
  • Check % of table
  • Click NEXT
  • Type 20 into the width box
  • Click the File Tab at the top of the page
  • Click Save As
  • Type Blank_Table into the box that appears
  • Click the Save button
You have now done the hard work of setting up a table that can form the basis of every web page you will ever need.

Have Your Content Ready

  • Write down the Title of your website
  • Write down page titles for each page of your website
Avoid having spaces in your page titles, it looks very amateurish.

The method in the next column assumes you are building a 6 page site, with a Home page, a Contact Us page and an About Us page.

If you need 8 pages, including Home, About Us and Contact Us then just make the table for the navigation menu 8 rows instead of 6.

You will use your page titles where
Save As,YourPage2, SAVE, etc are indicated.

Setting up Your Web Page

Your pages will all have the same structure; title, navigation menu, content, adverts.

Title

  • Click in the Top Left Cell
  • Hold down the left mouse button
  • Keep the left button pressed and move the mouse across the first 3 cells of the top row
  • The three cells should now be highlighted with borders around the cells
  • Click the Table Tab at the top of the page
  • Click on Join Selected Cells
  • Type Your Web Page title in the joined cell
  • Highlight the title using your mouse
  • Click on the down arrow next to Body Text
  • Check Heading 1
  • Your text should still be highlighted
  • Click the Format tab at the top of the page
  • Hold your mouse over Font
  • Scroll down to Arial, Comic Sans MS, Times New Roman or Verdana

These fonts are on almost everyone's computer. This site uses Verdana

If you use an unusual font that a user does not have installed then their computer will substitute one of these fonts for the one you have used.

This changes the look of your page disastrously.

Navigation Menu

  • Put your mouse pointer in the left most cell immediately under the title you have just set up
  • Hold the left mouse button down and move the pointer downwards so that the left hand column cells are highlighted
  • Click on the Table Tab (top of page)
  • Click on Join Selected cells
  • Click on Insert Tab (top of page)
  • Click Table
  • In the new window that appears enter 6 as the number of rows, enter 1 as the number of columns. Leave the border at 1 pixel
You now have a table where you can put your page titles.

Content

  • Put your mouse pointer in the top  cell of the second column immediately under the title you have just set up
  • Hold the left mouse button down and move the pointer downwards to the bottom of the column so that the column two cells are highlighted
  • Click on the Table Tab (top of page)
  • Click on Join Selected cells
  • Put your mouse pointer in the top  cell of the third column immediately under the title you have just set up
  • Hold the left mouse button down and move the pointer downwards to the bottom of the column so that the column three cells are highlighted
  • Click on the Table Tab (top of page)
  • Click on Join Selected cells
You will type your content in these two columns, going down the first one, then moving  to the next..

Adverts

Repeat the cell joining procedure for the bottom three cells in the right hand column.

SAVE YOUR WORK

  • Click the File Tab (top of page)
  • Click Save As
  • Type in a new File Name to save the page as
  • Click the Save Button

NOW the content Starts

  • Type your page titles into the cells of your navigation table.
  • The top cell will be Home (the front page of your website)
  • The last two cells will be Contact Us and About Us.
  • Cells in between can be anything you like.
  • If you need more cells in the table just Click on a cell, Click on Table tab (top of page). Hold your mouse pointer on Insert and move it to Row Above or Row Below
Save your page using Save As once for every page title.

  • Save As, index, SAVE
  • Save as, Contact_us, SAVE
  • Save As, About_us, SAVE
  • Save As, [YourPage2], SAVE
  • Save As, [YourPage3], SAVE
  • Save As, [YourPage4], SAVE

index is all lower case letters

Use the underscore character for About_us and Contact_us.
